Colorado Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families

Vietnamese Heritage Camp
August 6th - 9th, 2009 at Snow Mountain Ranch Fraser CO
2009 Directors: Heather Reu, Kristin Morgan-Tracy, Gigi Bayley
"The most valuable part of camp is the way our daughter looks forward to camp each year, and talks about different aspects of it all year. Her high level of comfort in being with kids and counselors that look like her, and being with multicultural families. Her pride in being "different" is such a refreshing contrast to how I grew up wanting to "blend in". -Vietnamese Heritage Camp 2006 Evaluation Comment

Vietnamese Heritage Camp is one of a few camps of its kind in the country, specifically designed for families with children adopted from Vietnam. Committed to exploring both the cultural and the adoption aspects of growing as an adoptive family, it is one of ten camps facilitated by the highly respected Colorado Heritage Camps, Inc. This is the 11th year for Vietnamese camp, and this year we come into the 21st century by focusing on Green Vietnam. More than just a camp….it’s an event. We will again be collaborating with the Vietnamese Adoptee Network (VAN) to bring workshops and activities for all age groups: elementary, middle/high school and adults.

What's Happening in 2009?

In 2009 we will explore the theme “Green Vietnam”….to include workshops on newly emerging animal and plant species, eco-tourism opportunities and a More Than Me project that supports “green” agriculture in Vietnam.

The elementary workshops will include old favorites like dance and martial arts, and new ones like: water puppets and Kids Bring Change, an opportunity for even the very youngest children to collect their pennies, nickels and dimes in order to provide “change for change.” This collection program will assist the More Than Me activity.

The middle/high school groups will zip to new highs and lows, work together to overcome obstacles on the adventure course and to raise money to support a farming family in Vietnam. In this “Year of the Water Buffalo” the More Than Me fundraiser hopes to raise enough funds to purchase 2 water buffalo to be donated to farming families in the North and South of Vietnam. Mid and high schoolers will also explore hip hop, music and fashion of the Vietnamese youth culture today, and enjoy the ever popular karaoke.

VHC’s 2008 More Than Me raised more than $1300.00, providing life-saving heart surgery for a young girl in Vietnam, who is today doing well.

Adult workshops will include opportunities for eco-tourism in Vietnam, the ever-popular cooking classes, facilitated discussions of issues that face our kids at different ages, and the always wonderful, and informative, VAN adoptee panels and discussions.

We look forward to seeing your family at camp!

Though we have very strong support from the local Vietnamese community, we are always looking for more volunteers to work with the kids, teach workshops, cook meals, etc., and to be counselors at camp. Please consider joining us this year as a community volunteers!

As a non-profit 501 C(3) organization, Vietnamese Heritage Camp is always seeking financial assistance to help keep camp costs reasonable for families, and still provide an outstanding program. If you'd like to help, please go to the Donations section of this web site, and thank you very much in advance.

We are also in need of donations of frequent flier miles to help defray costs of out of state speakers.  If you have miles you can donate please email us at info@heritagecamps.org

We hope to see you at camp this summer. For further information, please contact us .
