STILL ACCEPTING LATE REGISTRATIONS THROUGH MAY!
What does Latin American Heritage Camp mean to your family?
“It means facing the issues of adoption square on for a weekend; having my family wiht families that look like ours. creating an opening for conversation with my kids. hearing what other families are doing. obtaining resources and connections. Overall, a wonderful experience!!”
“Feeling like we’re just another family, and not feeling like we “stick out” or that we have to explain/answer questions.”
“Where to begin.…time together celebrating our children and family.…we all benefit and thoroughly enjoy ourselves.”
FOUR DAYS A SUMMER.….IMPACT FOR LIFE!
Latin American Heritage Camp in Colorado is one of the few camps of its kind in the country, designed specifically for families with children adopted from Central and South America, as well as those of Hispanic heritage adopted within the United States. It is one of 9 camps facilitated by the highly respected Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families non-profit organization. Latin American counselors serve as role models and mentors to the children as they participate with them in cultural classes while adult family members attend cultural and adoption related workshops ranging from Latin American cooking and customs to the blessings and challenges inherent in our adoptive families. Every year at camp we incorporate the roots of Latin American culture into our programming for all ages, exploring different aspects of this vast and amazing culture each year, while highlighting the distinct countries and regions where the children at camp were born.
We will explore the unique gifts and challenges that come with our mostly transracial adoptive families. We realize that as your children grow, they will be dealing with issues faced by any child of color, no matter their country of birth. At our camp, they are with a sea of families who are like theirs, and with children who are in the majority for a few days. Though we enthusiastically celebrate and highlight the different birth countries at this camp, we also celebrate adoption as a culture of its own. The similarities of being with other families “just like theirs” is what really bonds the children and their families so immediately at our camps.
We’re in the exciting planning stages of LAHC 2018 — - Let the Games Begin!
With the excitement of the winter Olympics games, we decided to have some fun with our camp theme this year. It is also the year for World Cup soccer, a much loved sport in Latin America. So “Let the Games Begin!” will set the tone for this summer’s adventures & we can’t wait! Our workshops will explore the many ways in which Latin Americans learn and keep their traditions alive through the games they play.
As always, there will be workshops that explore adoption, cooking classes for all ages and even some dance classes. Those dance classes will come in handy when it’s time to enjoy Saturday night’s celebratory FIESTA!
Watch this site for updates on presenters, workshops, and more for 2018!
Opening Ceremony will again be on THURSDAY evening this year! Be sure to plan on coming up for dinner and Opening Ceremony. We will also have some optional pre-camp activities for families who would like to spend Thursday with other families from camp!
