Highlights of 2007 Camp

Our theme for 2007 was Amazing Korea! This theme lent itself to many creative and interesting classes and events. Our high school campers had an “Amazing Race” theme interwoven. The teens covered most of Snow Mountain Ranch trying to beat other high school teams to various clues. It was not unusual to see many of them out of breath and asking anyone and everyone if they knew where something was hidden.

The elementary kids were not to be outdone by the high schoolers and had classes and tae kwon do events that also displayed the theme in glorious light.

As always, the special guests contributed immensely to KHC. We were honored to have the Korean Consulate from San Francisco join us to see what KHC is all about. Kyung Min Lee also returned from Hope Home in South Korea, led adult sessions and helped with the More Than Me for Middle School Campers.

Chris Winston from the Korean American Adoptee/Adoptive Family Network attended for her first time and will be sure to return. Sebastian Wang, who is a traditional Korean Drummer also attended and led some classes and performed for us at our concert. Here and Now, an Asian theatrical group from the LA area flew in and added immensely to our classes and concerts. Jennifer Arndt a Korean Adoptee and film-maker videoed almost the whole camp and promises to return too.

Peter Lee, our own Korean American Community of Colorado (KAC) member, led a session on Reunification of North and South Korea. As always, we had tremendous help from many of the KAC members, led by our own Lindy Curry. KAC helped with cooking, crafts, classes and more! We were also fortunate to have many Korean Churches help with Korean food, rice and food service.

Suegie Park worked many months behind the scenes raising funds through donations of food, money and time. At KHC, Suegie rallies the Korean community to support us with meals, food donations from churches and more.

Master Han Lee led our kids in a mini-Amazing Race and Tae Kwon Do for Elementary Campers. Michelle Weldon , a Korean Adoptee herself, led sessions on Behavioral Issues vs Adoption Issues and lent her expertise throughout camp. Linda Goerner, a KHC parent, offered a session on Grief and Loss with Adoptive Children and handled a sensitive issue with compassion.

Santa, the popular musical group from Japan (made up of Korean band members) surprised us and returned for yet another banner year. We had our own version of “Battle of the Bands” on Friday night. Kim Matsunaga led classes, hosted Eastern Children Welfare Staff and is truly our “KHC Angel”.

Of course, we had our usual group of excellent counselors and young Korean Community members who led classes, worked with our children and added Heart and Seoul to our Camp!
