Colorado Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families

Highlights of Last Year's Camp (2008)

Last year’s theme “Building our Future” was a huge success and lots of fun! CamHC 2008 provided something for everyone. It included:

  • Music
  • Dance
  • Kickboxing
  • Cooking class
  • Outdoor activities

The days were active for everyone. Our energetic Cambodian-American counselors again made camp a special experience for the kids, making connections and sharing their heritage.

Preschool and elementary kids spent time with their peers and counselors learning:

  • Dance
  • Kickboxing
  • Crafting spirit/bird houses
  • Making charcoal briquettes
  • Shopping in a traditional Cambodian market
  • Preparing and eating Cambodian food
  • HeART Talks

Middle and high school kids enjoyed a wide range of their own activities including:

  • Canoe racing
  • “Amazing Race”
  • More Than Me
  • HeART Talks

Parents also enjoyed their own workshops which included:

  • Parenting tweens
  • Khmer Rouge history and how parents can share it with their kids
  • Cambodian cooking
  • How an American teenager raised enough money to build a Cambodian school
  • Baseball in Cambodia

At the Friday night Water Festival, families of middle and high school kids enjoyed watching their kids compete in canoe races while the younger children and their parents played games and shared snacks. Following the games and races, dancers from Angkor Dance Troupe, Lowell, Massachusetts and Khmer Arts Academy, Long Beach, California joined together to perform a special Cambodian dance. The University of Southern California -- Long Beach drum group finished the evening with an entertaining and energetic skit.

On Saturday night, our traditional “Romvong” was held. Parents, children, counselors, and community members joined together to celebrate another successful camp with music, games, and dancing.

Closing ceremony was bittersweet as we watched the slide show of all of our memories of camp. Goodbyes to counselors were especially hard, but everyone left happy and hoping to return to camp in 2009.

For returning campers, 2009 looks even better than last year, filling up quickly with amazing presenters and fantastic topics. And for newcomers, we highly encourage you to come up the mountain and try out CamHC. We know once you experience this unique gathering, you will put it on your annual “to do” list for years to come!

We look forward to seeing your family at camp!

As a non-profit 501 C(3) organization, Cambodian Heritage Camp is always seeking financial assistance to help keep camp costs reasonable for families, and still provide an outstanding program. If you'd like to help, please go to the Donations section of this web site, and thank you very much in advance.

We are also in need of donations of frequent flier miles to help defray costs of out of state speakers.  If you have miles you can donate please email us at info@heritagecamps.org
