July 28 – 30, 2017 in Denver, CO
2017 Meetup Directors: Jon Reinert, Devon Shendleman, & Molly Stein
We had our second successful Adult Adoptee Retreat in 2016, with adult adoptees attending from around the country. International & domestic adoptees were in attendance, and the workshop topics and presenters were reflective of their varied experiences. Many stories were told and shared within large and small group discussions. The “Raising Aspens” exhibit held at Red Line, a Denver art gallery on Friday night of the AAR was impressive with visual, music, and performance art created exclusively by adoptees of all ages. But in 2017, we are changing it up a bit!
What are you doing the last weekend in July?
Meetup with other adoptees in Denver July 28 and 29!
This year we will present a series of documentaries by adoptees as well as an opportunity to paint, party, and get creative (with others who are just as crazy as you are!).
Break-the-ice with us Friday evening at an instructor led interactive art experience with light food and drinks. Get to know fellow adoptees in a fun, social setting with creativity built in. No previous art experience necessary! This will be held at the Art Garage, a creative art space called in central Denver. Cost is $15.
Followed by Saturday at a spacious Ethiopian coffee bar, Whittier Café, also in central Denver. “What does it mean to be adopted?” That is the question we’ll be inspired to answer throughout the day as we search through documentaries with the adoptee filmmakers themselves, and have panel discussions addressing the things we adoptees want to know. It’s going to be an informal, fun day for adult adoptees only (age 18 and up). We’ll end the day with a live band, food truck, beer and wine for as an open event for all Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families participants. Cost is $25 for the day. Food & drinks will be available for purchase throughout the day.
Whether you’re local to Colorado or looking to get away, our Meetup is a great opportunity to make connections, find resources and share your story. By adoptees for adoptees, this Meetup was made for you! Just CLICK HERE to reserve your place for our Meetup!
Here are a few quotes from the 2015⁄2016 Adult Adoptee Retreat participants:
“Adult Adoptee Retreats: A great experience to come together with other people who are like you, another group to call your family. A place to share open and honest communication about your experiences.”
“The retreat was very connecting; letting everyone talk and share both their struggles and triumphs with being adopted – I’ve never felt so validated.”
“As a youth, going to camp was always a fun activity. As a counselor, it became cathartic helping children address their adoptions. Now with the AAR, I can meet with other adults and work towards establishing my own mature identity.“
“Today we have become one people, a tribe, with one voice telling individual stories…The Adult Adoptee Retreat has brought together young and old, international and domestic, and we look forward to next year, sharing with even more adoptees, whether or not they’ve ever been to camp before.”
“A discussion in which I found inspiration, motivation, and solidarity as I continue my journey as an adoptee”
